Over 1,000 Jobs At Risk As Betfred Ends Multi-Million British Classics Horse Racing Deal

British horseracing is facing a growing sponsorship crisis, with Betfred’s withdrawal from the British Classics the latest in a string of high-profile exits by major bookmakers.

The Manchester-based operator has confirmed it will not pursue a three-year renewal of its backing for five of the sport’s most prestigious flat racing fixtures.

Betfred’s involvement stretched back to 2023, when it took on sponsorship of the Derby, the Oaks, and the St Leger, before expanding its portfolio to include the Newmarket Guineas races from 2025 onward.

According to reporting by The Telegraph, the bookmaker’s total financial commitment to those events has run into the millions across its years of involvement.

The company now says more than 1,000 jobs in its betting shops are at risk, underlining the scale of pressure the operator is facing from successive rounds of government taxation.

Fred Done, who founded and owns Betfred, had already signalled the direction of travel earlier this year, warning that a further tax increase in the October 2026 budget would likely force his hand on the British Classics deal.

That increase duly arrived, with finance minister John Healey pushing machine games duty from 20 percent to 25 percent, a rise that fell short of the 40 percent ceiling some in the industry had feared but still proved consequential.

A Betfred spokesman confirmed the decision, stating: “Following successive tax rises for the betting industry, and in particular the increase to machine games duty at the most recent budget, it is with great sadness that we have taken the difficult decision not to proceed with a three-year renewal of our sponsorship of the British Classics.”

The spokesman added: “It is not a decision we wanted to make, but the cumulative cost of government policy has left us with no choice.”

British Horseracing Authority chief executive Brant Dunshea had cautioned only last week that any further duty increase risked delivering a “devastating impact” on the sport’s commercial ecosystem.

Those warnings now appear to have been well-founded, as racing’s governing bodies absorb the practical consequences of the policy shift they had lobbied against.

Amy Starkey, managing director of the Jockey Club’s London hub, acknowledged the blow while accepting the reasoning behind it, saying the organisation was “naturally disappointed” but understood that the decision had not been easy for Betfred to make.

The departure is not an isolated incident, with Coral having already ended its long-running association with the Coral Cup following the earlier Reeves budget announcement, and bet365 also stepping back from sponsorship commitments.

The cumulative effect of these withdrawals raises urgent questions about where British horseracing will find replacement commercial partners willing to operate in an increasingly taxed sector.
