GamCare CEO Victoria Corbishley Warns Gamification Of Everyday Life Is Creating New Pathways To Gambling Harm

GamCare has identified the gamification of everyday life as one of three recurring pathways to gambling harm, based on analysis of helpline activity.

The UK gambling harm charity reached this conclusion after studying 2,356 anonymised webchat transcripts drawn from 20 days of National Gambling Helpline activity.

The findings form the centrepiece of GamCare’s newly launched Signals series, a quarterly insight publication releasing its first edition under the title “The Gamification of Everything.”

Design features including near misses, streaks, leaderboards, and artificial scarcity were identified as mechanisms appearing across gaming, retail, and financial services platforms.

GamCare cautioned that the analysis is not a measure of prevalence, describing it instead as an early signal of how gambling harm may be evolving beyond traditional boundaries.

The charity noted that the products under scrutiny remain legally distinct from gambling and are subject to entirely different regulatory frameworks.

People contacting the helpline have described spending far more on loot boxes than they intended, representing one of the clearest examples of harm detailed in the report.

GamCare CEO Victoria Corbishley said: “GamCare has nearly three decades of experience supporting people affected by gambling, and the forms of gambling people struggle with have changed dramatically in that time.”

Corbishley added that the helpline is often the first point of contact for support, making it the place where new and emerging forms of harm are most commonly identified and shared.

She was direct in framing the scope of the report’s findings, stating: “This is not a call to classify every game, purchase or investment as gambling, and the law must continue to distinguish between products.”

However, Corbishley warned that focusing exclusively on legally defined gambling risks missing the broader picture of harm facing consumers today.

She said: “Signals is about spotlighting the emerging trends we see through our services: issues that are often underreported, but that we need to understand more deeply if we are to better support those at risk.”

GamCare has called for prevention efforts and professional training to help individuals and practitioners recognise high-risk design features across all product categories.

The charity also urged greater research into how harmful behavioural patterns move between different products and platforms as the digital landscape continues to evolve.

Finally, GamCare advocated for the development of shared principles around responsible gamification to protect consumers across sectors well beyond traditional gambling regulation.
