UK Gambling Commission Suspends Bet St George Ltd and BresBet Ltd Over Regulatory Failures

The UK Gambling Commission has suspended the operating licences of Bet St George Ltd and BresBet Ltd after identifying multiple suspected regulatory failures.

The suspensions took effect immediately on 28 August 2026, with the Commission opening reviews under section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005.

That section of the Act allows the regulator to launch a review if it suspects a licence holder may be unsuitable or out of compliance with regulations.

The Commission stated: “The suspension of BresBet and Bet St George Ltd follows commission inquiries which revealed suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings.”

The regulator added that “the commission is now carrying out a review of both licences under section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005 and the suspension will remain in place until the commission is satisfied the businesses are compliant.”

BresBet Ltd operates bresbet.com, holding remote permissions covering bingo, casino, real-event betting and virtual-event betting since February 2025.

The business was formed in Sheffield in March 2021 and has maintained a visible presence in British horseracing and greyhound racing, including sponsorship of trainer Fergal O’Brien’s stable.

Bet St George is a considerably newer operator, incorporated in Sheffield in June 2025 and launching its gambling website as recently as March 2026.

The company’s four remote permissions began in December 2025, offering sports betting, racing, virtual events, casino games, live casino content and bingo through a single account.

Both companies list offices at the same Hawley Street address in Sheffield, and Companies House records identify Nicholas James Brereton as a director of both businesses.

Despite the suspensions, both operators are still permitted to allow customers to access their accounts and withdraw funds during the review period.

The action against these two operators forms part of a broader enforcement push by the Gambling Commission across the industry in recent months.

Just days before the suspensions, QuinnBet Limited was ordered to pay £609,104 after investigators uncovered failings in anti-money laundering and social responsibility practices.

Holland Park Leisure Limited, which operates adult gaming centres, was also fined £150,000 earlier in August for breaching self-exclusion rules designed to protect vulnerable players.

In July, Evolution Malta Holding Limited was hit with a £4.75 million penalty for supplying online games to unlicensed businesses operating outside regulated markets.

Petfre Limited, the operator of Betfred, faced a £900,000 fine in June for social responsibility breaches, while Stakelogic BV was ordered to pay £122,835 for slot game design standard violations.

The Gambling Commission’s intensified enforcement signals continued regulatory pressure on operators failing to meet compliance standards across the UK market.
