UK Gambling Commission Suspends BresBet Ltd And Bet St George Ltd Operating Licences Over Regulatory Failures

The UK Gambling Commission has suspended the operating licences of BresBet Ltd and Bet St George Ltd after identifying multiple possible regulatory failures at both companies.

The suspensions took effect immediately on 28 August 2026, with the Commission opening reviews under section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005.

That section of the legislation allows the regulator to launch a formal review if it suspects a licence holder may be unsuitable or out of compliance with regulations.

The Commission cited “suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings” at both operators but did not publicly detail the specific conduct behind its enquiries.

Both operators are still permitted to allow customers to access their accounts and withdraw funds during the period of suspension, though neither can resume normal trading activity.

BresBet Ltd runs bresbet.com and has previously sponsored events in horseracing and greyhound racing, having been formed in Sheffield in March 2021 and securing remote operating permissions in February 2025.

The operator offered sports and racing wagers, in-play betting, virtual events, casino games and live dealer tables, with UKGC permissions covering remote bingo, casino and real-event and virtual-event betting.

Bet St George Ltd operates betstgeorge.com, was incorporated in Sheffield in June 2025, and publicly launched its gambling website in March 2026, with four remote permissions beginning in December 2025.

The two companies share offices at the same Hawley Street address in Sheffield, and Nicholas James Brereton is listed as a director of both businesses according to Companies House records.

BresBet’s latest accounts, covering the year to March 2025, show 14 average employees and £3.5 million owed to creditors within a year, while Bet St George has not yet filed any accounts.

The suspensions arrive against a backdrop of sustained UKGC enforcement action across the UK gambling industry throughout 2026.

On 20 August, QuinnBet (Gibraltar) Ltd accepted a £609,104 penalty after the regulator found shortcomings in its money-laundering controls and customer protection measures.

Two days earlier, Holland Park Leisure Ltd was fined £150,000 after the UKGC found the adult gaming centre operator had failed to comply with a self-exclusion requirement.

In July, Evolution agreed to pay £4.75 million following a UKGC investigation, and Petfre (Gibraltar) Ltd, which operates Betfred, agreed in June to pay £900,000 for separate regulatory failures.

A suspension is not a final finding of wrongdoing, and the ongoing reviews will determine whether BresBet and Bet St George can demonstrate compliance and ultimately retain their operating licences.
