Spain’s 1-0 Extra-Time Win Over Lionel Messi’s Argentina Saves Bookmakers From Costly World Cup Bloodbath

Spain’s narrow 1-0 extra-time victory over Lionel Messi’s Argentina brought a difficult 2026 World Cup to a close for British bookmakers.

The final ended goalless after 90 minutes, providing crucial late relief for operators who had endured a punter-friendly tournament throughout.

Argentina failed to register a single shot on target until extra time, making the match one of the most forgettable finals in World Cup history.

Odds comparison site Oddschecker described the 2026 competition as “a bit of a bloodbath” for operators, with popular selections repeatedly delivering for punters.

Eventual winners Spain were the fourth most popular outright selection on Oddschecker, accounting for 10% of all betslips created on the market.

Kylian Mbappé’s Golden Boot success proved another costly outcome for bookmakers, with the Real Madrid striker featuring on 7% of all betslips in that market.

Mbappé, Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi and Mikel Oyarzabal combined for 20 group-stage goals between them, far exceeding expectations set by previous tournaments.

England and France remained significant bookmaker liabilities deep into the knockout stages before both were eliminated at the semi-final stage.

Betfred’s Mark Pearson said: “Although Spain went off tournament favourites it ended up a good result for us after the weight of cash on France and going top price with England.”

Pearson noted that the 0-0 scoreline at full time defeated first-goalscorer bets, correct-score selections and a wide range of Bet Builder combinations before Ferran Torres netted the winner.

“All bookies love nil-nils, and that was the perfect result in the final in 90 mins,” Pearson said, reflecting on the timely reprieve for operators.

Pearson identified France’s 2-0 semi-final defeat to Spain and England’s goalless group-stage draw with Ghana as Betfred’s two best results of the tournament.

“The Golden Boot was a write off for us early doors with so many top players all scoring plenty,” Pearson added, highlighting the scale of early losses in that market.

Betfred’s Bet Builder product did offer some consolation, recording a significant increase in turnover across the tournament despite the costly outright and player markets.

Ladbrokes also confirmed that Spain’s triumph and Mbappé’s Golden Boot had generated substantial payouts across both online and retail channels.

Ladbrokes PR manager Alex Apati said: “Spain to win the World Cup and Mbappé to win Golden Boot were both very well backed ahead of, and during, the tournament, so Ladbrokes has been paying out hundreds of thousands of winning customers both online and in shops.”

Apati added that the bookie-friendly final result softened the blow, noting that many football markets are settled on the 90-minute result rather than after extra time.

888-owned William Hill described Spain as one of its preferred outright results, with England and France representing the two outcomes it most wanted to avoid.

William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “France and England were the two teams we most wanted to avoid winning the tournament, so that was a positive outcome.”

Golden Ball winner Rodri proved particularly favourable for William Hill, having opened the tournament at 33/1 with only one notable bet of £50 placed at 28/1.

Phelps said: “Golden Ball winner Rodri was another excellent result for us. He opened at 33/1, with the only significant bet being £50 at 28/1, so we didn’t mind that choice.”

Spain’s victory also triggered William Hill’s Final One Standing free-to-play jackpot, with 55 players completing all 12 rounds and sharing a £250,000 prize, receiving just over £4,500 each.
