Cirsa And Joaquim Agut Acquire Casino Figueira In Major Portugal Land-Based Expansion

Cirsa has taken a majority stake in Sociedade Figueira Praia, the operator of Casino Figueira, marking the company’s first land-based acquisition in Portugal.

The deal, for which financial terms were not disclosed, adds a physical property to a Portuguese business that had previously remained entirely digital.

Casino Figueira is situated in Figueira da Foz, a coastal city located west of Coimbra, and holds a gambling licence dating back to 1948.

The venue was originally known as Casino da Figueira when it first opened, and has since grown into a multi-faceted entertainment complex in the heart of the city.

Beyond its gaming floors, Casino Figueira operates restaurants, live entertainment and private events, offering several distinct revenue streams under a single roof.

Cirsa executive president Joaquim Agut said: “Casino Figueira becomes the first land-based casino for Cirsa in Portugal, representing a new milestone in our history.”

Agut added: “This acquisition, together with that of CasinoPortugal.pt in 2024, reinforces our ability to offer an integrated gaming and entertainment proposition through online and offline channels.”

Cirsa first entered the Portuguese market in December 2024 through the acquisition of online gaming operator CasinoPortugal.pt, which holds licences for online casino and sports betting products.

The Casino Figueira deal now gives Cirsa full access to both the online and land-based sides of Portugal’s regulated market, completing a dual-channel strategy in the country.

This approach mirrors the group’s broader international playbook, pairing digital expansion with physical casinos, gaming halls and retail betting operations across multiple regulated territories.

Portugal’s physical casino market has remained relatively flat in recent periods, with casinos and machine halls generating approximately €65m in the first quarter of 2026, just 0.8% more than the same period a year earlier.

The market closed 2025 down 1.2% overall, with fourth-quarter gross gaming revenue reaching €69.8m, representing a 3.8% decline year-on-year.

Automatic machines accounted for nearly 79% of that fourth-quarter total, with machine revenue rising 2.3% while banked table-game revenue fell a significant 22.7%.

Casino Figueira’s machine-heavy profile and diversified hospitality offer make it a well-suited vehicle for Cirsa’s approach in a market where slots continue to dominate.

Beyond Portugal, Cirsa continues to grow its international footprint aggressively, with operations spanning Italy, Morocco, Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Peru, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

The group also entered Paraguay this month through a majority investment in Slots del Sol, which operates both online and land-based gaming businesses.

Late last year, Cirsa also completed four casino acquisitions in Peru and an additional purchase in Marrakech, further broadening an estate that includes hundreds of casinos and over 85,000 gaming machines.

The expansion programme is underpinned by strong financial performance, with Cirsa posting €2.34bn in 2025 operating revenue and operating profit before flotation costs rising 7.8% to €753.5m.

Cirsa trades on the Madrid Stock Exchange, where shares opened 2026 at €14.52 before falling to a six-month low of €12.22 on 24 June and recovering to €13.46.
