DCMS Launches Long-Awaited Consultation On Illegal Gambling Sponsorship In British Sport

The UK’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport has formally launched its consultation on illegal gambling in sports, marking a significant moment for British sports integrity.

The consultation centres specifically on unlicensed gambling operators and their ability to enter into sponsorship agreements with sports clubs across Britain.

DCMS first made its intention to ban unlicensed operators from sponsoring British sport public back in February 2026, signalling the direction of travel early in the year.

Following that announcement, the department also engaged directly with the Premier League as part of its efforts to understand how such a ban could be implemented effectively.

The consultation will invite views on both the timing and the overall approach to implementing a ban on unlicensed operator sponsorships in British sport.

Officials have indicated that the start of the 2027/28 season represents the earliest point at which a ban could feasibly come into force across the sporting landscape.

The launch of the formal consultation comes after a period during which the DCMS had told industry publication SBC News that the process “will go live soon.”

Critics have noted that the months-long delay in reaching this point allowed offshore betting brands time to secure new sponsorship deals with Premier League clubs before any restriction could take effect.

That criticism adds political pressure to the consultation process, with campaigners keen to see a swift and firm outcome that closes any remaining loopholes for unlicensed operators.

The broader context reflects growing concern within government and sport about the influence of unregulated gambling brands on high-profile British sporting institutions.

The Premier League, as the most commercially valuable sports competition in the country, sits at the heart of the debate given the scale of sponsorship revenue its clubs attract.

While the consultation process is now underway, stakeholders across sport, gambling regulation, and supporter groups will all have the opportunity to submit their views on the proposed measures.

The outcome of the consultation is expected to shape policy that could fundamentally change how gambling brands engage with British sport at the highest levels.
