The iconic American Powerball lottery is set to make its UK debut on 21 July, marking the first time the draw has been offered outside of the United States.
National Lottery steward Allwyn UK will begin selling £4 Powerball tickets through its retail network, website and app, subject to final regulatory approval.
UK players will be eligible to enter the first official draw on 23 July, with an estimated top prize of around $416m if the current jackpot continues to roll over.
Powerball has produced seven prizes worth more than $1bn since its inception in 1988, including the world’s largest lottery jackpot of $2.04bn won in California in 2022.
The UK launch comes off the back of significant operational upgrades by Allwyn, including a nationwide replacement of National Lottery retail sales terminals throughout 2025.
Allwyn also expanded its distribution network through partnerships with Aldi, GoPuff and mobile technology partner Vodafone as part of a broader strategy to modernise the lottery’s retail reach.
The UK offering is enabled through a partnership with the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), meaning British players will compete in the same jackpot pool as participants across 48 US lotteries.
UK jackpots will start at £12m with no cap, allowing prizes to potentially grow into the hundreds of millions and, in rare circumstances, surpass £1bn.
Winners will receive the top prize over a period of 30 years in line with the game’s US annuity structure, and the UK version will also include exclusive prize tiers.
Players must select five main numbers from 1 to 69 and a Powerball number from 1 to 26, with draws taking place every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at approximately 4am UK time from the Powerball studio in Florida.
Rebecca Paul, President and CEO of the Tennessee Lottery and former President of the World Lottery Association, welcomed the expansion, saying: “This next step brings us closer to a thrilling milestone for Powerball. More players means faster-growing jackpots, more excitement and even greater impact for the communities we serve.”
Andria Vidler, CEO of Allwyn UK, added: “We’re excited to give National Lottery players the chance to dream bigger, while supporting thousands of Good Cause projects across the UK every week. Powerball jackpots can soar into the billions, offering breath-taking sums with the potential to transform lives and communities.”
Vidler continued: “As we begin the countdown to the first draw later this month, you won’t be able to miss Powerball’s arrival with a major launch lined up. We’re encouraging players to get involved when tickets go on sale, and we’ll be crossing our fingers for our first UK winner.”
Allwyn expects Powerball to make a meaningful contribution to National Lottery funding for good causes across the UK alongside its headline-grabbing jackpot potential.
