Topdog Raises $2.5M Seed Round Backed By FanDuel Co-Founder Nigel Eccles And Early DraftKings Investors

Topdog has secured $2.5m in seed funding led by Boston Seed Capital to scale its multiplayer real-money skill games platform in the United States.

The latest round brings the company’s total capital raised to $4.1m, including pre-seed funding previously received from Lightspeed India.

According to Topdog’s official statement, the fresh capital will be used to “accelerate user acquisition and introduce more real time multiplayer games built around sports.”

Boston Seed Capital led the investment, with The Raine Group, Bullpen Capital, Versus Ventures, Spoondrift Capital and Permit Ventures all participating in the round.

Peter Blacklow, managing director at Boston Seed Capital, offered a clear endorsement of the startup’s potential, saying: “We believe they have an opportunity to build an important new category.”

That category, real-money skill gaming, sits outside state gambling regulations in the US because its products are not legally classified as games of chance.

The space nonetheless carries significant ties to mainstream betting, with FanDuel co-founder Nigel Eccles confirmed as one of Topdog’s notable backers.

Revenant VC Founder Ryan Moore and gaming industry consultant Dustin Gouker are also among the investors supporting the company’s growth ambitions.

The involvement of Boston Seed Capital, The Raine Group and Bullpen Capital carries added weight given that all three were early backers of both FanDuel and DraftKings during their formative years.

Eccles’ journey with FanDuel offers a relevant parallel, as that platform also operated outside state gambling frameworks before transitioning into a fully licensed sportsbook.

Where Eccles once identified a market gap for daily fantasy sports, he appears to see a similar opening now in the emerging real-money skill gaming vertical.

Most skill-gaming apps have players compete individually, with scores compared only after a game concludes, but Topdog takes a different approach entirely.

Its games run in real time, turn by turn, with two players simultaneously drafting, deciding and adjusting their strategies while the match is actively underway.

The current game lineup includes Basketball Hustle, 21 Hustle, Tilt and Pinfall, all built on technology the company says was developed entirely in-house.

That proprietary technology covers matchmaking, player liquidity, payments, fraud detection and live operations, positioning Topdog as a vertically integrated operator within its niche.

Co-founder Aman Agarwal framed the product as one designed for the hours surrounding sporting events, not just the action happening during them.

“Consumers already expect multiplayer competition everywhere else in gaming,” Agarwal said. “Real money skill-gaming should be no different. We want Topdog to become the place where sports fans and gamers can compete against each other, in real time, whenever they want to play.”

With experienced iGaming investors now aligned behind the platform, Topdog is positioning itself as a serious contender in a vertical that currently has only a handful of prominent operators.
