France’s strict separation between online and land-based gambling has handed Banijay Group an unusually straightforward path through the country’s regulatory process.
The French Competition Authority concluded that Banijay’s existing gambling operations posed no threat to competition in the land-based casino sector, clearing the acquisition without conditions.
At the heart of that decision is a structural quirk of the French market: online casino gambling is prohibited, with digital wagering limited to sports betting, horse racing, and poker.
Banijay’s principal gambling asset in France is Betclic, an online platform that operates squarely within those permitted verticals, making any overlap with a physical casino operator essentially impossible.
Because Betclic and JOA Group serve entirely separate regulatory environments, the FCA saw no grounds for concern and waved the deal through without requiring remedies or concessions.
The acquisition itself was first agreed in July 2026, representing one of the more significant consolidation moves in the French gaming sector in recent years.
Banijay formally submitted its acquisition plan to the FCA on 7 October 2026, outlining the scope of the deal and the 33 land-based casino venues that would transfer under its ownership.
Those 33 properties, which include venues in regions such as Normandy, represent a substantial physical footprint across the French casino landscape.
For a company already regarded as a major force in continental European media and iGaming, the addition of JOA Group’s estate marks a meaningful step into bricks-and-mortar gambling territory.
The deal also signals that Banijay’s appetite for growth is far from satisfied, with the company’s ambitions understood to extend well beyond the French market.
Observers across the European gaming industry will be watching closely to see which market Banijay targets next as it continues to expand its regional presence.
The JOA acquisition, now cleared without friction, gives the group a firm operational base from which to pursue that broader continental strategy.
