Everton Under-21s forward Martin Sherif has been formally charged by The Football Association with breaching its betting rules, the governing body confirmed on Wednesday.

Sherif, who is 20 years old, is accused of placing 61 bets on football matches across a period spanning November 20, 2024 to February 12, 2026.

The FA issued a statement confirming the charge, which falls under FA Rule E1.2, covering prohibited betting activity by football participants.

The FA’s statement read: “It’s alleged that the player breached FA Rule E1.2 in respect of 61 bets placed on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026.”

The statement also confirmed a response deadline, adding: “Martin Sherif has until Monday 17 August to provide a response.”

Sherif has yet to make a senior first-team appearance for Everton, though he has featured as an unused substitute on the matchday squad.

The young forward previously represented the Netherlands at Under-17 international level, demonstrating the early promise that brought him to Everton’s academy setup.

His recent loan spells have seen him gain senior experience, first at Rotherham United and then at Port Vale, both of which came before the current charges were filed.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton are cooperating fully with the FA investigation and are supporting Sherif throughout the disciplinary process.

It remains unclear at this stage precisely which matches the bets were placed on during the timeframe outlined in the FA’s charge.

FA regulations impose a worldwide ban on betting on football matches for all participants connected to professional clubs, covering competitions from the Premier League down through the EFL, WSL, and several non-league divisions.

Prohibited activity extends beyond match outcomes and also includes betting on transfers, managerial appointments, and team selections, making the scope of the rules extremely broad.

Betting violations have become an increasingly visible issue within English football, with the FA pursuing a number of high-profile cases in recent seasons at various levels of the game.

Sherif now has until the August 17 deadline to formally respond to the charge before the FA proceeds further with the disciplinary process.
