Comparasino Co-Founder Martyn Hannah Calls On Affiliate Sector To Put Player Protection At The Point Of Discovery

Comparasino co-founder Martyn Hannah argues that comparison sites must stop acting as passive traffic merchants divorced from the regulatory realities of the brands they promote.

The player journey does not begin with an operator, it begins with the comparison site, making affiliate platforms the first and most critical line of player protection.

Hannah points out that industry debate tends to focus heavily on operator compliance, regulatory friction, and interactions at the play and cashout stages, missing a vital link in the chain.

If players are exposed to high-pressure, non-compliant, or reckless marketing before they even click “Play”, any operator they ultimately sign up with is already on the back foot.

The uncomfortable reality, according to Hannah, is that for a significant portion of the comparison sector, responsible gambling remains little more than a box-ticking exercise.

Safety messaging is frequently relegated to microscopic font in the footer and treated as a legal tax on operations rather than an active user feature.

Hannah describes this approach as passive compliance, doing just enough to avoid a regulatory flag while maintaining a layout optimised purely for aggressive conversion.

Modern players are hyper-aware of corporate authenticity and can spot a superficial compliance exercise from a mile away, increasingly migrating toward platforms that genuinely prioritise their well-being.

Hannah’s answer to this problem is what he calls “mindful friction”, a deliberate inversion of the traditional comparison site model that demands every pixel be optimised for immediate click-through rates.

At Comparasino, this means dedicating premium, high-converting digital real estate to safe gaming tools and messaging on every single page of the site.

Rather than burying compliance text, the platform positions a prominent Safe Gaming Banner at the very top of its pages, supported by a dedicated responsible gambling block embedded directly within core content layouts.

The platform also operates a standalone Safe Gaming Hub, treated with the same design prestige and data-driven care as its casino bonus tables, anchoring the entire user experience.

Hannah is clear that this architecture integrates safety directly into the player’s decision-making process, rather than simply reminding users of safe play in passing.

A key commercial boundary underpinning this approach is the decision to exclusively partner with UKGC-licensed operators, described not merely as a legal requirement but as a deliberate choice to protect traffic integrity.

Hannah acknowledges there is a persistent, outdated anxiety in the acquisition sector that integrating robust responsible gambling measures kills conversion and strangles profitability, calling it a short-sighted myth.

High-pressure acquisition tactics may yield immediate traffic spikes, but they fundamentally fail to create long-term value, and in the modern regulatory landscape, operators need sustainable volume rather than compliance headaches.

Online casino brands are currently under immense scrutiny regarding player affordability, source of funds, and proactive customer interactions, making the quality of referred traffic a critical commercial concern.

When a comparison site delivers traffic acquired through hyper-aggressive, context-free marketing, Hannah argues, they are handing the operator a regulatory ticking time bomb with high churn and elevated compliance risk.

By introducing intentional UX safeguards at the comparison stage, Comparasino effectively pre-screens users so that those who click through to a partner brand are already conditioned to see safety as part of the entertainment experience.

Hannah states that this commitment to active protection has paid massive dividends, significantly increasing the lifetime value and quality of the players Comparasino delivers to its operator partners.

Shifting focus from raw click volume to player quality creates what Hannah calls a genuine win-win scenario, building deeper commercial partnerships rooted in trust and performance rather than race-to-the-bottom volume metrics.

He concludes with a clear challenge to the wider comparison sector, urging it to self-regulate to the highest possible standards ahead of mandatory regulatory updates rather than waiting to be forced into action.

“Ethical marketing isn’t a drag on commercial success, it’s the very engine of its longevity,” Hannah states, summing up the core argument underpinning Comparasino’s entire operational philosophy.
