Allwyn UK Launches Powerball In Britain As National Lottery Modernisation Continues

Allwyn UK has launched Powerball in the United Kingdom, marking the first time the iconic American lottery game has been made available outside the United States.

The company is selling £4 Powerball tickets through the National Lottery’s retail network, website, and app, subject to final regulatory approval.

UK players became eligible to enter the first draw on 23 July, linking them directly to the same jackpot available to American participants.

The expansion was first announced in April through an agreement between the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) and Allwyn UK, formalising the international partnership.

This marks the first time a non-US lottery has contributed to the Powerball jackpot pool, representing a significant moment in the game’s history.

The UK-specific version offers jackpots starting at £12 million, with the prize pool linked to the US Powerball game via the MUSL partnership.

UK players select five main numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26, with draws held three times per week.

Jackpot winners in the UK will receive their prize paid out over 30 years, consistent with how American winners typically receive their winnings.

The UK game also features an exclusive “match two main numbers” prize tier, offering a fixed prize of £8 that is not available to players in the United States.

The current estimated jackpot stands at $416 million, equivalent to roughly £311 million, making it an immediately compelling proposition for British players.

By expanding the player base internationally, Powerball jackpots are expected to grow faster, creating bigger prize opportunities for players without altering the game’s $2 ticket price or jackpot odds.

Powerball has produced seven prizes worth more than $1 billion since its inception in 1988, including the world’s largest lottery jackpot of $2.04 billion, won in California in 2022.

Security standards for the UK game will mirror those applied to US lotteries, ensuring the integrity and compliance of Powerball operations on both sides of the Atlantic.

The launch follows Allwyn’s most significant draw-based Lotto revamp since 1994, which rolled out from 7 June and gave players two opportunities to win with every £2 ticket.

That Lotto overhaul is projected to more than double the number of Lotto millionaires per year, rising from around 140 to approximately 345 annually.
