Scientific Games has handed its top job to a gambling industry newcomer, marking a notable shift in leadership philosophy for the lottery and gaming technology firm.
Dan Flynn, who built his career across sectors including automotive software, heavy equipment, and vehicle rental, officially assumed the chief executive role on 2 November 2026.
His appointment signals that Scientific Games prioritised broad operational and technology credentials over sector-specific gambling experience when selecting its next leader.
Flynn arrives from CDK Global, the automotive retail technology company, where he most recently held the position of chief transformation officer.
Before CDK Global, Flynn accumulated executive experience at Caterpillar and Hertz, giving him a resume that spans multiple major industries but, until now, not gambling.
The leadership change follows a period of transition at Scientific Games, with long-serving CEO Pat McHugh having departed less than two months before Flynn’s arrival.
Kevin Schneider, who stepped in as interim chief executive following McHugh’s exit, has now transitioned into a chairman role as Flynn takes the reins.
Flynn acknowledged the distinctive nature of the business he is joining, stating: “Scientific Games combines global operations, technology and customer delivery in ways that align closely with my experience.”
Schneider, for his part, expressed confidence in the incoming chief, saying Flynn “brings the operational and technology leadership experience to build on that momentum, support our talented teams and advance our global capabilities to support continued growth and the opportunities ahead.”
The reference to momentum suggests Scientific Games considers itself in a strong competitive position and expects Flynn to accelerate rather than redirect its current strategic course.
Flynn’s outsider status could prove an asset, bringing fresh perspectives to a sector where established players often cycle through the same pool of industry veterans.
The speed of the appointment, with Flynn confirmed and in post within weeks of Schneider taking the interim role, suggests the board had a clear candidate in mind relatively quickly after McHugh’s departure.
Scientific Games operates across lottery systems and gaming technology on a global scale, meaning Flynn will immediately oversee complex international operations spanning multiple regulatory environments.
His track record in transformation roles at large technology-driven businesses will likely be tested early as the company looks to expand its global footprint under new leadership.
