TikTok Draws Hard Line On All Gambling Content, Treating Legal And Illegal Promotions Identically

Unlike most regulatory frameworks, TikTok’s gambling policy draws no distinction whatsoever between licensed operators and illegal gambling services looking to reach its users.

The platform has issued a sweeping reminder to both marketplace sellers and content creators that gambling-related promotion of any kind is off-limits across its e-commerce ecosystem.

At the heart of the message is a bluntly worded directive: “You are prohibited from selling any gambling-related products, services, or paraphernalia on the platform.”

The ban covers a notably wide range of products and activities, encompassing betting services, lotteries, roulette, and both slot and claw machines.

TikTok’s decision to treat all gambling content the same, regardless of its legal standing in any given market, reflects the platform’s particular sensitivity about its user base.

Teenagers and young adults make up a dominant share of TikTok’s global audience, a demographic reality that shapes the platform’s approach far more aggressively than competitors bound by advertising codes alone.

Regulators across multiple jurisdictions have increasingly turned their attention to social media, identifying it as a primary channel through which illegal gambling content reaches vulnerable groups.

The UK’s Gambling Commission and the Netherlands’ Kansspelautoriteit, known as the KSA, have both publicly identified the spread of unlicensed gambling promotions across platforms including Meta, X, and TikTok as a pressing concern.

The problem has drawn in major industry players as well, with British operator Entain having previously raised alarms about illegal gambling promotion circulating on social media during the World Cup.

In the Netherlands, the situation has escalated to the point where Dutch trade body VNLOK took the extraordinary step of summoning Meta to court over its handling of illegal gambling content.

Against that backdrop of mounting regulatory and legal pressure, TikTok’s firm restatement of its zero-tolerance position signals that the platform is taking steps to insulate itself from similar scrutiny.

Whether the policy proves enforceable at scale across millions of creators and sellers remains a question the wider industry will be watching closely in the months ahead.
