Finnish Football Association Investigates Match-Fixing Concerns After Kaj Björkqvist Raises Alarm Over HIFK Clash

Finland’s Football Association is investigating potential match-fixing following a fourth-division game that raised serious concerns among betting integrity monitors.

HIFK hosted Atlantis at their Töölö home arena last week, with the match producing a chaotic eight-goal affair that quickly drew scrutiny from officials.

HIFK took a 3-1 lead in the first half, only for Atlantis to overturn it and run out 5-3 winners, with the scoreline’s dramatic swings attracting suspicion from monitoring bodies.

The Football Association of Finland, working alongside private betting integrity organisations, detected suspicious wagering activity linked to the match.

Kaj Björkqvist, Integrity Officer at the Finnish Football Association, spoke to local outlet Hufvudstadsbladet and confirmed that multiple official sources had flagged the game.

Björkqvist stated: “We have received information from several official sources that may indicate match-fixing. We are currently investigating the suspicions. This is terribly sad. It kills competitive sport.”

International bodies have also been brought into the investigation, underlining the seriousness with which Finnish authorities are treating the matter.

Finland operates one of Europe’s few active summer football calendars, meaning lower-division fixtures attract relatively little mainstream attention and oversight from integrity watchdogs.

The HIFK versus Atlantis match drew no more than a thousand spectators, according to Hufvudstadsbladet, making it a prime target for those seeking to exploit low-profile contests.

Antti Koivula, Chief Compliance Officer at Hippos ATG, explained that even minor league games can generate enormous sums for experienced bettors willing to exploit inside information.

Koivula told the outlet: “The range is wide. If it is someone who knows what they are doing, a total of €20,000 to €500,000 can be wagered on a second-division match. If amateurs are behind it, you can remove at least the final zeroes.”

Match-fixing in football is a well-documented global problem, with organisations such as the International Betting Integrity Association and Sportradar consistently ranking the sport as the most vulnerable to betting manipulation.

Finland is not without precedent on this issue, as FC Finnkurd was expelled from the Men’s Division 3 earlier this year following a two-year investigation into match-fixing.

The latest case arrives at a particularly sensitive time, as Finland is currently in the process of overhauling its national gambling regulations, meaning any fresh scandal could accelerate political pressure on lawmakers.
