Nigel Farage Heads To Record-Breaking Clacton By-Election As Bookies Install Him As Near-Certainty

The Clacton by-election is shaping up to be one of the most heavily traded political betting markets in British history, with bookmakers firmly backing Nigel Farage.

As of 11 August, Farage was priced at 1.01 on the Betfair Exchange, reflecting a 99% chance of victory according to Betfair Predicts, making him one of the surest favourites seen in a political market.

Flutter Entertainment-owned Betfair spokesperson James Mackie confirmed that £1.8 million had been traded on the event as of Tuesday morning, placing it second on the all-time list of by-elections.

The only market to surpass it is Makerfield, which took place last month and currently holds the record as the most traded by-election in history.

Only three by-elections have ever traded more than £1 million, and all three have occurred in 2026, underlining the remarkable surge in political betting interest this year.

Gorton and Denton attracted £1.3 million in trading, while Clacton has now blown past that figure and is closing in fast on the all-time record.

When the market first opened, activity was frantic, with Count Binface matching as low as 5.1, implying a 20% chance of victory, and over £300,000 changing hands within the first three days alone.

Since then, Binface has drifted dramatically out to 55 on the Betfair Exchange, representing just a 2% implied probability, as Farage’s dominance of the market has become increasingly clear.

Reclaim Party leader Laurence Fox is also among the candidates listed, currently priced at 66/1 with Betfair, reflecting the narrow field of realistic contenders beyond Farage.

While Binface recently released a viral manifesto that attracted considerable public attention online, bookmakers appear unmoved, treating a Farage defeat as a near-statistical impossibility.

Daily trading volumes have settled at around £70,000 per day in the final week, a figure that reflects market stagnation as the outcome has become increasingly certain and less likely to shift.

By-elections are typically harder to price than general elections because local trends, independent candidates, and community-specific issues can complicate the picture significantly.

In this case, however, Farage dictated the market from the outset, opening at an 85% implied probability according to Betfair Predicts and only strengthening from there.

Star Sports noted that in terms of both bet numbers and stakes, Clacton had already surpassed the levels they recorded for the Makerfield by-election in June, highlighting the exceptional public interest in this contest.
