Brazilian Betting Brand Pixbet Faces Sale Amid Mounting Regulatory Pressure

Pixbet, one of Brazil’s most recognisable pre-regulation betting brands, is actively seeking a buyer as the company battles serious regulatory and operational challenges.

The Paraíba-founded operator rose to prominence after its 2020 founding through an aggressive marketing and sponsorship strategy targeting Brazil’s massive football fanbase.

At its peak, Pixbet secured front-of-shirt deals with some of the country’s most celebrated football clubs, including a high-profile partnership with Flamengo that ultimately ended early amid reports of late payments.

That Flamengo deal has since been replaced by a shirt agreement with market leader Betano, owned by Kaizen Gaming, reportedly worth around $50 million per year over three years.

Multiple Brazilian market experts have told NEXT.io it is widely understood within the industry that Pixbet is looking for a buyer, though this situation is far from unique among its peer companies.

One major player that was reportedly interested at one point was US giant DraftKings, which is understood to have engaged in talks with several operators in the region before ultimately choosing not to enter the Brazilian market.

Interest in Brazilian operators has been heightened following Flutter Entertainment’s acquisition of an initial 56% stake in Betnacional in September 2024, achieved at an 18.4x EBITDA multiple.

Local expert and Hebara executive director Amilton Noble told NEXT.io: “From a market perspective, Pixbet was one of the largest Brazilian betting operators in the recent pre-regulation period.”

Noble noted that “the company invested heavily in marketing, sponsored major football clubs including Flamengo and built one of the strongest domestic betting brands in Brazil.”

However, he added that “after the regulation came into force, the company did face significant regulatory challenges,” noting it was among the few licensed operators whose activities were temporarily suspended by the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting due to compliance issues.

The most recent regulatory blow came when the Juvenile Court of Campina Grande ordered a nationwide suspension of Pixbet’s betting platforms over insufficient age-verification technology, including the absence of adequate facial recognition systems.

Pixbet appealed the ruling to the Court of Justice of Paraíba, but the appeal was denied, with judges stating the ban would remain until the required technology had been implemented.

Leadership uncertainty has added to the company’s difficulties, following the resignation of former CEO Carlos Martin last week due to personal reasons, leaving the business without a formally named successor.

A BGaming press release dated 3 August lists Pixbet co-founder and major shareholder Ernildo Junior de Farias Santos as the company’s CEO, which appears to resolve the question of who is currently at the helm.

Sources familiar with the matter also indicated the company had previously been managed by a team based in Portugal, though that group is no longer involved with the business.

Despite its difficulties, one industry expert suggested Pixbet could still represent a valuable acquisition target for an international operator seeking a recognised brand foothold in Brazil, though they cautioned that regulatory and operational risk would likely temper buyer enthusiasm.

Noble reflected on the broader market shift, saying: “The transition from an unregulated to a regulated market has been challenging for many operators,” with several previously successful companies struggling to adapt to new compliance and governance requirements.

Blask data underlines how difficult conditions have become for local players, with five of the seven leading operators in Brazil now owned by foreign entities, including podium players Betano, Superbet, and bet365.

One anonymous source indicated that local operators have faced significant customer retention problems, with customer acquisition costs ranging from $25 to $40, while compliance has proven an additional strain on already-stretched businesses.

Pixbet did not respond to a request for comment.
