Multi-Event Prediction Markets Could Pose First Real Challenge To The Traditional Accumulator

The accumulator has defined modern sports betting for decades, offering punters the chance to turn small stakes into massive returns across multiple events.

Despite their enduring popularity, accumulators have faced remarkably little competitive pressure since they were first introduced, remaining largely unchanged in structure and concept.

That could now be changing, as prediction markets rapidly evolve beyond single-event contracts into multi-event trading products that bear a striking resemblance to the parlay format.

Prediction markets have surged in popularity since 2024, initially driven by a large US audience in markets where traditional legal sports betting remains only partially available.

Multi-event trading allows users to combine outcomes from sport, finance, politics, and even weather into a single position, dramatically widening the scope beyond anything a traditional sportsbook accumulator offers.

Travis Geiger, co-founder of WagerWire, argues that the accumulator, despite being one of sports betting’s most successful products, is also one of the least evolved offerings in the entire industry.

“Today’s accumulator experience is built around operator economics: black-box correlation pricing, discretionary cash-out values, and liability management,” Geiger told NEXT.io, adding that prediction markets flip that model entirely.

Geiger said that once users can access transparent pricing and actively manage multi-event positions, attracting the large audience that has never found traditional sportsbooks compelling becomes far more achievable.

“History shows that markets rewarding flexibility consistently outperform products built around fixed outcomes,” he said, expressing confidence that sports betting will follow that same path toward active risk management.

Seth Young, CEO of High Roller Technologies, approached the debate differently, arguing that “challenge” may not be the most accurate framing when comparing multi-event trading and accumulators.

Young described them as “different instruments for solving different things,” with accumulators offering simplicity and intuitive payoff structures that carry genuine and durable appeal among recreational bettors.

“Multi-event trading isn’t trying to ‘out-accumulator’ the accumulator,” Young said, describing it instead as a multi-leg exchange position priced transparently and structured around probability rather than a pre-set return.

Young believes the more interesting question is whether a market-structure approach opens up a class of participants that the fixed-odds model was never really built to serve.

Both Geiger and Young agree that multi-event trading is unlikely to simply absorb existing sports bettors, instead pointing toward an entirely new audience as the real growth opportunity.

Young characterised the core audience as people who already think in probabilities, comfortable with exchange mechanics and engaged across politics, macro trends, culture, and a broad range of outcome categories.

“Some of them come from a trading background; some are simply people who’ve never found a fixed-odds product that matched how they actually think about uncertainty,” Young said, describing this audience as new rather than borrowed.

Geiger added that an entire generation has grown up managing portfolios and trading digital assets, making actively trading a sports position feel entirely natural and intuitive to them.

On the path to mainstream adoption, Young highlighted three critical factors: regulatory clarity, sufficient liquidity and market depth, and experience design that makes probability-based instruments feel as accessible as existing products.

Geiger was more bullish, declaring that prediction markets and multi-event trading are already bringing about a “renaissance,” and that the inability to trade or exit an accumulator position will soon feel like the “dark ages.”

“WagerWire’s founding principle was that sports bets should be tradable assets,” Geiger said, noting that an idea once considered radical is now the direction the entire industry is rapidly moving toward.
